About this book
What happens when a winter's fun ends on a sledding hill—and two lively children must learn to lie still?
In Harmony Village, snowy lanes and open hills give Jack and Jill plenty of room for fun. Then a sledding accident leaves both children seriously hurt. Louisa May Alcott's Jack and Jill follows these close neighbors through the long work of recovery, when ordinary games and school days suddenly feel far away.
Jack is proud and used to having his own way. Jill is brave, warm, and learning to accept help. As Mrs. Minot guides them and Frank brings steady support, schoolmates arrive with news, games, and plans. Their world grows smaller, but friendship keeps them part of village life. The challenge is not only getting well, but learning patience.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1 of 6
A village where children make their own fun
The story is set in a small New England village that Alcott calls Harmony Village. It is a place of snowy lanes, open hills, and neighbors who know one another well. Children there walk to school together, trade jokes, and make plans for every season. Alcott paints it as a good place to grow up, though not a perfect one.
Jack and Jill are two of these children. Jack is a lively, rather proud boy from a comfortable family, and his mother and brother Frank care for him closely. Jill comes from a poorer home, where there is less money and a good deal more work. Their homes differ, but the two share a love of play and a habit of speaking their minds.

What is Jack and Jill by Louisa May Alcott about?
It tells of two village children, Jack and Jill, who are badly hurt in a sledding accident. The story follows their long recovery, their friendship, and the way family, friends, and neighbors help them grow.
When was Jack and Jill by Louisa May Alcott written?
It was first published in 1880, a dozen years after Little Women. Alcott set it in a New England village and wrote it for young readers, drawing on her own sense of village life.
Is Jack and Jill the same as the nursery rhyme?
No. The title is borrowed from the old nursery rhyme about two children and a fall, but the novel is a separate story. It is about two neighbors hurt on a winter hill.
