In December 1945, a farmer digging near Nag Hammadi in Upper Egypt struck a sealed jar containing thirteen leather-bound codices — fifty-two ancient tractates, most of them unread for over 1,500 years. They were likely buried in the late 4th century, after Athanasius’ festal letter of 367 AD defined the canon and monastic libraries cleared their shelves. This shelf gathers that recovered library and the wider Gnostic tradition around it: Sethian revelations like Zostrianos and Allogenes, Valentinian teaching, hymns to the divine Sophia, and dialogues in which a risen Christ speaks in riddles the councils never sanctioned.
