The story opens at Hugson's Siding in California, where a late train lets off Dorothy Gale before dawn. She carries a wicker suitcase, a parasol and a covered birdcage that holds her kitten, Eureka. A cheerful farm boy named Zeb is waiting with a buggy and an old, bony cab horse called Jim.
The two are distant cousins by marriage, and they take to each other at once. Dorothy has just come back from Australia with Uncle Henry and means to go home to Kansas the next day. Zeb explains that earthquakes are common in California and that people there do not fear them much.
