About this book

What if growing up means keeping your imagination—and learning when to put your plans aside?

At sixteen, Anne Shirley steps into the Avonlea schoolroom as its teacher. In L. M. Montgomery’s Anne of Avonlea, the imaginative girl now faces the work of guiding children, helping at Green Gables, and finding her place in a farming village on Prince Edward Island.

When Marilla takes in orphan twins Davy and Dora Keith, Anne has more to learn at home, too. With Diana Barry and her friends, she also sets out to improve Avonlea. But curious children, unexpected neighbors, and her own quick temper keep testing her good intentions, often with funny results.

Anne becomes the teacher of Avonlea

The book opens with Anne Shirley, sixteen years old, at Green Gables. She has finished her studies at Queen's Academy and has won a place as teacher in the Avonlea school. She is not the only one who wanted it. Gilbert Blythe, her old rival from school, had also been offered the post. He gave it up and took the school in the neighboring village of White Sands, so that Anne could stay close to Marilla. Anne is surprised by this kindness, and the two begin to mend an old quarrel.
