About this book
What happens to old friendships when a young king wants all the power?
In The Vicomte de Bragelonne, Alexandre Dumas and Auguste Maquet bring the musketeers into a changing France. D'Artagnan serves as captain, still waiting for proper reward. Athos raises his son Raoul away from court. Aramis pursues greater influence, while Porthos longs for a title to match his wealth.
Louis the Fourteenth wants to rule alone, and royal favour carries a dangerous weight. Raoul loves Louise de la Valliere, but she is caught in the glare of the king's attention. Around them, a dying cardinal, an exiled English king and rival ambitions draw old friends into new tests of loyalty.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Old friends scatter as a new age begins
The story opens around 1660. The wars of the Fronde, which tore France apart in the earlier novels, are over, and the old companions have gone their separate ways. Each has been shaped by what he wanted from life and by what life gave him. Dumas takes his time with them, because the novel depends on how much we already care.
Athos, the Comte de la Fere, lives on his estate near Blois. He is calm, grave and generous, and he has put his whole heart into raising Raoul, the young Vicomte de Bragelonne. The boy is brave, polite and devoted to his father. Athos hopes that Raoul will have the happiness that he himself lost long ago.
