About this book

Beyond the hive lies a world of beauty and friendship—but a curious young bee cannot count on kindness alone.

In Waldemar Bonsels’s Maya the Bee, young Maya learns the rules of hive life from Cassandra, an older bee. Shared work and loyalty keep their community alive. But when Maya flies out, curiosity draws her beyond her duties. She wants to see the world and understand it for herself.

The meadow brings encounters with insects and small creatures, each with habits and opinions of their own. Generosity sits beside vanity, and friendship offers no promise of safety. As Maya faces genuine danger, including the threat of hornets, her freedom raises a difficult question: what does she owe the home she leaves behind?
