A Universe of Light and Guardians

In the cosmological vision presented in this text, this supreme being is surrounded by an elaborate court of divine emanations — beings of pure light who have proceeded from the ultimate source and who themselves constitute the highest levels of the heavenly pleroma.

Below this supreme realm, and this is where things become genuinely complex, the cosmos is structured into a series of descending levels, each governed by its own set of divine or semi-divine powers. These powers are not simply neutral administrators. They have personalities, they have agendas, and they have the authority to prevent souls from passing through their domains unless those souls can demonstrate the proper knowledge and credentials. In the technical language of Gnostic scholarship, these gatekeepers are often called archons — a Greek word meaning rulers or authorities. Some Gnostic systems present the archons as actively malevolent, as forces of darkness and ignorance who actively work to keep souls trapped in the lower realms. Others present them in a more ambiguous light, as beings who are simply doing their job, maintaining the order of the cosmos, but whose jurisdiction must be transcended by any soul serious about returning to the divine source.

The text presented here takes a particularly elaborate approach to this cosmological architecture. It does not simply describe the heavenly realms in general terms. The specific cosmological furniture is unfamiliar, but the underlying impulse — the hunger to understand the structure of reality, the desperate desire to find a path through the apparent chaos and suffering of existence toward something that is genuinely good and genuinely real, the conviction that there is more to human consciousness than the material world alone can account for — these are impulses that have never gone away. They drive religious and spiritual seeking in every culture and every era. They drive philosophy and science and art. They are, in some fundamental sense, constitutive of what it means to be human.

The specific answers offered here are not our answers. But the questions are very much our questions.

The living Jesus taught his apostles, saying: "This is the teaching in which the whole of knowledge dwells." The living Jesus answered and said to his disciples: "Blessed is the one who has crucified the world, and who has not allowed the world to crucify him." The apostles answered with one voice, saying: "O Lord, teach us the way to crucify the world, so that it may not crucify us, and we be destroyed and lose our lives." The living Jesus answered: "The one who has crucified it is the one who has found my word and fulfilled it according to the will of him who sent me."

Chapter 2

The apostles answered and said: "Speak to us, O Lord, that we may hear you. We have followed you with our whole hearts. We have left behind father and mother, we have left behind vineyards and fields, we have left behind goods and the greatness of kings, and we have followed you, so that you might teach us to know the life of your Father who has sent you."

The living Jesus answered and said: "The life of my Father is this: that you receive your soul from the race of the understanding mind, and that it ceases to be earthly and becomes understanding through what I say to you in the course of my discourse, so that you fulfill it and are saved from the archon of this age and his persecutions, which have no end. But you, my disciples, hasten to receive my word with certainty and to know it, so that the archon of this age may not fight against you — this one who found no commandment of his own in me — and so that you also, my apostles, may fulfill my word in relation to me, and I myself make you free, and you become whole through a freedom that has no blemish. As the Spirit of the Comforter is whole, so will you also be whole, through the freedom of the spirit of the Holy Comforter."
