The Law cannot lead to truth
The homily opens by dividing its hearers into those who can understand and those who cannot. The author speaks to people who can listen with the mind rather than with the ears of the body. The Law, meaning the commandments given to Israel, is treated as a guide that never reaches the truth it seems to promise.
The writer says that people who live under the Law are bound to desire, and that this binding keeps them in the world. Such people may be pious, but they have not seen where they come from. The author urges listeners to look beyond the commandments toward knowledge of the one who is beyond them.
