If salvation comes through inner transformation rather than outward conformity, what becomes of the authority of creeds and councils? The Gnostic challenge to emerging orthodox Christianity was not merely theological — it was political, social, and existential. And the response of the emerging church hierarchy was fierce. Gnostic texts were condemned, burned, and banned. Gnostic communities were labeled heretical and persecuted. For more than fifteen hundred years, our knowledge of Gnosticism came almost entirely from the polemical writings of its enemies — church fathers like Irenaeus, Tertullian, and Epiphanius, who described Gnostic beliefs in order to refute and ridicule them.

An Egyptian farmer named Muhammad Ali al-Samman, digging for fertilizer near the cliff face of Jabal al-Tarif in Upper Egypt, struck a large earthenware jar with his mattock. Jesus Teaching Disciples After Resurrection

It came to pass, when Jesus had risen from the dead, that he spent eleven years discoursing with his disciples, instructing them only up to the regions of the First Commandment and up to the regions of the First Mystery — that which is within the Veil, within the First Commandment, which is the twenty-fourth mystery from without and below, those twenty-four being in the second space of the First Mystery which is before all mysteries — the Father in the form of a dove.

Disciples' Ignorance of the Mysteries

And Jesus said to his disciples: "I have come forth out of that First Mystery, which is the last mystery, that is the twenty-fourth mystery." But his disciples did not know or understand that anything existed within that mystery. They thought of that mystery as the head of the universe and the head of all existence, and they thought it was the completion of all completions, because Jesus had told them that it surrounds the First Commandment and the five Impressions and the great Light and the five Helpers and the whole Treasury of the Light.

Moreover, Jesus had not told his disciples the full extent of all the regions of the great Invisible, nor of the three triple-powers, nor of the twenty-four invisibles — all their regions and their aeons and their orders, how they are arranged — those which are the emanations of the great Invisible — nor their ungenerated and their self-generated and their generated, nor their light-givers and their unpaired and their rulers and their authorities and their lords and their archangels and their angels and their decans and their servants and all the houses of their spheres and all the orders of every one of them.

And Jesus had not told his disciples the full extent of the emanations of the Treasury, nor their orders, how they are arranged; nor had he told them of their saviours, according to the order of each one, how they are; nor had he told them what guard stands at every gate of the Treasury of the Light; nor had he told them of the region of the Twin-saviour, who is the Child of the Child; nor had he told them of the regions of the three Amens, in what regions they are extended; nor had he told them into what region the five Trees are extended; nor concerning the seven Amens, that is the seven Voices, what their region is or how they are extended.

And Jesus had not told his disciples of what nature the five Helpers are, nor into what region they are brought; nor had he told them how the great Light had extended itself, nor into what region it had been brought; nor had he told them of the five Impressions, nor of the First Commandment, into what region they had been brought. He had spoken with them in general terms, teaching them that these things exist, but he had not told them their full extent or the order of their regions, how they are arranged. For this reason they did not know that there were also other regions within that mystery.

And he had not told his disciples: "I went forth out of such and such regions until I entered into that mystery, and until I went forth out of it." Rather, in teaching them, he said only: "I have come forth from that mystery." For this reason they thought of that mystery as the completion of completions, as the head of the universe, and as the total Fullness. For Jesus had said to his disciples: "That mystery surrounds that universe of which I have spoken to you from the day when I first met with you even until this day." For this reason, then, the disciples believed there was nothing within that mystery.
