The Interpretation of Knowledge is the first work in Codex XI, one of thirteen papyrus books found near Nag Hammadi. The books were buried in a jar, probably in the fourth century, and came to light in 1945. Their texts are in Coptic, the late form of the Egyptian language written in Greek letters.
The book is badly damaged. The opening pages are lost, and many lines on the surviving pages have gaps. Scholars fill some of these by careful guesswork and mark the rest as unknown. For that reason, any summary has to stay at the level of the large themes that clearly survive.
