Zostrianos chronicles a mystic's ascent beyond the earthly realm, capturing a Gnostic vision of a universe where light and truth eclipse the physical world. Excluded from orthodox canon, this text was unearthed at Nag Hammadi, revealing the spiritual odyssey of a seeker confronting the limits of human understanding.
Zostrianos, the complex Gnostic visionary text from the 3rd century AD discovered among Egypt's Nag Hammadi codices in 1945, is available as a complete modern-English translation online with audiobook narration included.
The Gnostic text Zostrianos was condemned by early Church fathers and nearly lost to history until its remarkable discovery among the Nag Hammadi manuscripts in 1945.
Long before the boundaries of orthodox religion were permanently drawn, the early Gnostics embarked on radical spiritual quests to uncover the true nature of existence. Zostrianos is a towering masterpiece of this ancient esoteric tradition. Discovered among the sands of Egypt in the renowned Nag Hammadi library, this visionary manuscript documents the epic cosmic ascent of a seeker who refuses to accept the limitations and suffering of the earthly realm.
Driven to the brink of despair by the philosophical contradictions of the material world, Zostrianos journeys into the desolate wilderness. There, he is visited by a radiant celestial messenger. What follows is one of the most detailed, majestic, and complex accounts of heavenly ascension in all of ancient literature. Guided through the intricate hierarchy of the divine realms—known as the Aeons—Zostrianos undergoes a series of transformative spiritual baptisms.
Step out of the shadows of the material world and embark on the ultimate spiritual journey. Unveil the secrets of Zostrianos today.

The scroll of the splendor of the eternally living words which I, Zostrianos, set down — and Yolaos — when I entered this world to help the people of my own generation and those who would follow, the living ones who are chosen.
The God of truth dwells in perfect truth, in knowledge, and in everlasting light!
Once my mind had left behind the darkness of the body within me, the chaos of my thoughts, and the shadowed, craving-driven feminine nature — something I paid no attention to — and once I had recognized how endlessly I had fixed myself upon material concerns and had condemned both the dead element within me and the visible ruler-god of this world, I boldly proclaimed wholeness to the shattered. I had sampled their ways briefly, since birth had made me a visible being, yet they never satisfied me. Instead I kept setting myself apart from them, for my origin lay in a holy birth — one that, though capable of bearing children, was of a higher order entirely.
After I had refined my soul in its purity, I gave new strength to the reflective spirit within me, and I rose out of the dark slumber and discovered my paternal God. Though I had labored at this by every means, a holy spirit greater than God gave me power. It came to rest on me alone while I was perfecting myself, and I beheld the perfect Child — who he is and what belongs to him. Again and again, and in varied forms, he showed himself to me as a harmonious oneness while I searched for the male father of everything: things that exist as concepts and things available to the senses, particular and universal, fragmentary and complete, that which holds and that which is held, bodily and bodiless, of essence and of matter, along with all things connected to them, and the Existence mingled with these and with the god of this perfect Child, Kalyptos the unbegotten, the power within every one of them.
Concerning existence, then: how is it possible for beings — belonging as they do to the age of those who arise from an invisible, complete, self-generated spirit as unbegotten images in three parts — to derive from what stands above existence, to have been before all these, and still to have entered the world? How do those in its presence, together with all these, derive from the good that lies above? What kind of power and cause belongs to it, and where is its place? What is its origin? In what way does what it creates belong to it and to all these at once? How, though it is a single whole, does it stand apart from itself, seeing that it exists as being, as form, and as blessedness, and that, brimming with life, it bestows power? How could existence without existence show itself within a power that truly exists?
Wanting to grasp these matters, I prayed about them daily — following the custom of my people — to the god of my fathers. And I kept praising them all, for the searching forebears and ancestors of my line had found what they sought.
For my own part, I never ceased searching for a resting place fit for my spirit, somewhere the visible world could not hold me. And then, deeply troubled and grieving over the senselessness all around me, I found the daring to act — to hand myself over to the desert's wild animals and a brutal end.
Before me appeared the angel who knows the eternal light, and he spoke to me: "Zostrianos, why have you lost your mind, as though the great eternal ones above were unknown to you? Are you unaware that you are among the chosen, and were therefore instructed about the task before you, so that you could now reach salvation? Never do damage, and never give ear to your familiar companions, so that others whom the heavenly Father will select may be rescued. Do you imagine yourself the father of your own race? Or that your father is Yolaos? You possess a holy angel that has guided you along the path by means of holy people. Rise and pass beyond these regions! At another time you will come back to them, to proclaim a living people, to rescue the deserving, and to empower those who are chosen. For the contest of this age is great, while the time in this world runs short."
After he had spoken these words to me, I rose with him onto a vast, luminous cloud with great eagerness and joy, and I set down my molded fleshly shape upon the earth, where glorious ones kept watch over it. We slipped free of the whole world and its thirteen ages, together with the host of angels belonging to them. No one saw us, yet their ruler was disturbed by our passage through, for our luminous cloud — a substance finer than anything the universe holds — was beyond all telling in its greatness. Its loveliness blazed with light. It has the power to lead unstained spirits, being a spirit that bestows life and an intelligent mode of thought, unlike worldly things that are formed from pliable matter and persuasive argument. At that moment I understood that the power inside me had overcome the darkness, since it held light in its fullness. There I received baptism, and there I took on the likeness of the glorious ones and became as one of their number.
I moved through the airy realm and went past the Copies of the Ages, having immersed myself there seven times in living water — one immersion for each of the ages — never pausing until I had passed through them all.
I ascended to the Temporary Dwelling that truly exists. I received baptism there, and the world fell away behind me. I ascended to the truly existing Repentance and was baptized six times. Passing through the sixth, I received power from that very one. I ascended to the Self-Generated Ages and took my stand there, having beheld a light both real and true, genuinely existing out of its own self-made root, together with mighty angels and glorious ones beyond any counting.
I received baptism in the name of the divine Self-Generated One, through the powers that hold authority over the living water, Michar and Micheus.
The great Barpharanges made me pure.
I was honored and inscribed in glory.
The rulers over these powers set their seal upon me: Michar, Micheus, Seldao, Elenos, and Zogenethlos.
I was transformed into a reflective angel and took my place upon the first — that is, the fourth — age alongside the souls. I gave blessing to the Self-Generated One, who is divine, and to Pigeradamas the forefather, an eye belonging to the Self-Generated One, the first perfect human; and to Seth Emmacha Seth, the child of Adamas, the sire of the unshakable race; and to the four luminous ones, Armozel and Oroiael, Daveithe and Eleleth; and to Mirothea, who mothered Adamas, and Prophania, the begetter of the luminous ones, and Plesithea, the mother of the angels.
I underwent baptism a second time in the name of the divine Self-Generated One, through these same powers. I became a male angel. At the second — that is, the third — aeon I took my stand alongside the children of Seth, and I spoke blessings over them.
Then for the third time these same powers baptized me in the name of the divine Self-Generated One. I was transformed into a holy angel, took my place upon the third — that is, the second — age, and spoke blessings over these same ones.
And for the fourth time I received baptism from these same powers. I became a perfect angel and took my stand upon the fourth — that is, the first — age, and spoke blessings over these same ones.
Then I searched for one power belonging to them. I spoke these words aloud, declaring myself and my purpose. And I kept pressing him with questions about the right way to grasp these things: "Why do differences exist in the capacity to hear them, given that hearing varies from person to person? Could these very things be their powers? Or are they identical, only bearing different names? Is one soul unlike another soul? For what reason do human beings differ among themselves? In what way, and to what degree, are they truly human?"
Authrounios, that great and eminent one, spoke to me: "Is it about the things you have already crossed through that you are asking? Or why this region of air carries the pattern of the world? Or how many copies of the aeons exist? Or why they are not disturbed? Or about the Temporary Dwelling and the Repentance for Sins, as well as the aeon-linked creation and the world that has no true existence? I will plainly instruct you about everything you are asking me. No discovery or command is able to appear to you, not even from the Invisible Spirit, before you know these things and the instruction that Eleleth will reveal to you."
And together the two of us moved through the aeons that I had already crossed.
And Authrounios, the great and eminent one, spoke to me: "The region of air arose through a rational thought, and it displays in purity what is made and what perishes, in preparation for the arrival of the great judges, lest they experience sensation and become caught within creation. Yet once they reached it and looked upon the world's contents, they pronounced its ruler mortal like the world itself, because it is a substance and a governing principle of matter — that dark and corrupted creation.
"When Sophia gazed down, she beheld the darkness, illuminating it while remaining within her own place — serving as a model for worldly things, a governing principle for the bodiless matter and the formless shape, a formless form. It gives space to each thing of the cosmos, to the All, to the corrupted creation, being a rational thought that persuades the darkness. He sows seed out of his reasoning, since it remains impossible for the one ruling over creation to behold any of the eternal ones. What he saw was a reflection, and by means of the reflection he saw within it, he fashioned the world. Then with a reflection of a reflection he fashioned the world, and afterward even the reflection of what had appeared was withdrawn from him.
"Sophia, however, received a resting place in return for her repentance over her sins.
"Consequently, because no pure original image existed within her — none that had been in him beforehand, and none already brought into being through him — he drew on his imagination and fashioned what remained, for Sophia's image is forever corrupted and deceptive. But the ruler, because he copies and takes form by pursuing the image, owing to the great outpouring that descended, turned his gaze downward."
When these things reached my ears and I saw them, I came to grasp the thinking of those who reasoned about matters they do not understand. For he has fixed his thought upon the ages that are higher than himself, reaching beyond what he is able to comprehend.
And once more he said, "Sophia was made perfect by means of the will of the commander through whom the region of air endures, having immutably held back the world's destruction.
This is how the Copies of the Ages exist: they have not attained a form of equal power, yet they hold eternal glorious beings within them, and they serve as thrones of judgment for all the powers. But whenever souls receive illumination from the light inside these copies, and from the pattern that repeatedly makes itself known within them, the soul then supposes she is beholding the truth and the eternal cause within the blessed thought that exists as a single unity. She receives all of that light, and she becomes whole, and she dwells within that Temporary Dwelling. And the proof of Repentance for Sins rests with the souls according to the power within them by which they are able to stand.
The lesser souls receive their training through the Aeonic Copies, which take in a reflection of those souls while they still live in the world. Once each aeon has appeared, souls come into being and pass one after another out of the copy of the Sojourn into the true Sojourn, out of the copy of Repentance into the true Repentance, and out of the copy of the Self-Generated Aeons into the true Self-Generated Aeons, and so on in the same manner. The souls have their existence in a light, all of them by way of the Aeonic Copies.
On one side they perceive, and certain ones go forth from the outside light, all of those who offer blessing to the god who is over the mighty aeons, and to the unbegotten Kalyptos, and to the great masculine Protophanes, and to the perfect Child who stands above god, and to the eye belonging to him, Pigeradamas.

Zostrianos describes a mystic's visionary journey through celestial realms, encountering divine beings and receiving revelations about the nature of reality. The text reflects Gnostic beliefs about spiritual ascent and the soul's return to divine origins.
Zostrianos was composed in the 3rd century AD and reflects Gnostic theology that developed outside mainstream Christianity. It was never considered for biblical inclusion and represents a distinct mystical tradition preserved by Gnostic communities.
The author of Zostrianos is unknown. The text is attributed to a figure named Zostrianos, possibly connected to the Neoplatonic philosopher Zostrianus, but this attribution is likely pseudonymous, common in ancient mystical literature.
