The Paraphrase of Shem is a Sethian Gnostic work, found in 1945 near Nag Hammadi in Upper Egypt within Codex VII of a buried collection. It survives in Coptic, the late form of the Egyptian language.
Sethians honored Seth, the third son of Adam and Eve, as the ancestor of a spiritual line. This text takes the name of Shem, son of Noah, which sets its teaching before the Flood and gives it ancient weight. The word paraphrase comes from a Greek term that can mean a restatement or expansion of older tradition.
