About this book
A rough cart, long summer light, and a road through Finland: how much comfort would you trade for curiosity?
In Through Finland in Carts, Mrs. Alec-Tweedie takes you beyond the railway into a country of lakes, forests and small towns. The cart is no comfortable coach. Village stations break the journey, farmhouses provide meals, and the road brings its share of discomfort. Her cheerful, curious voice makes these ordinary moments as inviting as the northern landscape.
This travel account, first published in 1897, explores Finland while it is a Grand Duchy under the Russian crown, with its own laws, language and institutions. Alec-Tweedie notices signs of that setting in towns and conversations. Yet her attention keeps returning to people: farmhouse hosts, innkeepers and posting-station keepers whose customs give the journey its human warmth.

A little known land and a summer island home
The book begins with a gap in knowledge. When the author plans her trip, London offers one small pamphlet and a huge cardboard map. Some friends even ask whether polar bears walk the streets. She decides to go anyway. Her sister and Frau von Lilly, a native of Finland, travel with her.
Her ship takes four and a half days from Hull and winds among countless islands. Wooden stakes mark every channel. Government boats set them out in spring and pull them up in November, because the sea is closed to traffic for about seven months.
