About this book

What does kindness mean when a debt can tear a family apart?

On a Kentucky farm, Mr. Shelby needs to pay his debts, and other people's lives become his bargaining chips. Tom, a kind, devout man, is sold away from his wife and children. Eliza Harris takes her small son, Harry, and runs north rather than let him be sold.

In Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe follows these divided paths through a world of traders, families, preachers and children. In New Orleans, Augustine St. Clare sees slavery's wrong but fails to act. Through him and others, Stowe asks whether sympathy means anything without responsibility—and whether any family is safe under slavery.

What is Uncle Tom's Cabin about?

It tells of enslaved people in the American South in the years before the Civil War. A devout man named Tom is sold away from his family, while a young mother named Eliza runs north with her child.

Is Uncle Tom's Cabin a true story?

No, it is a novel, but Stowe drew on accounts of slavery, newspapers and court cases. She published A Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin in 1853 to show the sources behind her story. It was first published in 1851 and 1852.

Why did Harriet Beecher Stowe write Uncle Tom's Cabin?

She was angered by the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, which forced citizens of free states to help return people who had escaped. She wanted to show readers, especially Northern Christians, what slavery did to families.
