La risposta breve
- Named by the most lists: The Great Gatsby, Hamlet and Macbeth are on five of the seven lists; Antigone, Frankenstein, The Odyssey, Romeo and Juliet and The Scarlet Letter on four. A count says how many lists name a book, not how many students read it.
- Time: at 238 words a minute the classics named by two or more lists take from 1 h 18 min (Macbeth) to 13 h 40 min (The Republic); half take less than 5 h 8 min (books that hold several works left out).
- Level: Nicomachean Ethics scores highest of them at formula grade 10.9; Shakespeare's plays score grade 3 to 4 because the formula only sees their short lines. A formula grade is not a recommended school grade.

Named by two or more lists
A classic's place is the number of the seven lists that name it, nothing else; titles with the same count share a place and stand in alphabetical order. Every title opens its edition page. Where a play or poem is part of a larger book with us, it is not measured alone: the row names the book and gives no time or level.

These books are named by three or more of the lists but are not in our library, so they have no row here: Of Mice and Men (4 of 7); The Crucible (4 of 7); To Kill a Mockingbird (4 of 7); A Raisin in the Sun (3 of 7); Fahrenheit 451 (3 of 7); Lord of the Flies (3 of 7); Night (3 of 7); Things Fall Apart (3 of 7).
The seven lists
| List | What it is | Year | What we took |
|---|---|---|---|
| NCTE 2025 survey | 4,096 public middle and high school English teachers, surveyed January 2023 to June 2024; open question: the 10 texts used most in class | 2025 | the 10 titles of Fig. 2 with the number of teachers naming each |
| ALSCW 2010 survey | 406 public school English teachers of standard and honors courses in grades 9, 10 and 11 (773 course descriptions), surveyed 2009 | 2010 | the 20 most frequently assigned titles (Table 2) and the 15 most frequent per grade (Tables 3 to 5), as one list |
| Applebee 1989 study | 322 public schools, grades 9 to 12, 1988 to 1989; the share of schools assigning each title | 1989 | the top 10 book-length works, with the share of schools from ALSCW Table 6 |
| Vocabulary.com 2025 | the books whose vocabulary lists high school teachers assigned most on Vocabulary.com in the year to 2025 | 2025 | all 25 titles in their order |
| AP Literature exam | every title the College Board's open question suggested, with the years it was named (the College Board publishes no required reading list; its Course and Exam Description leaves the choice of works to the teacher) | 2026 | the 45 titles named 10 or more times (counted from the years listed for each title) |
| Open Syllabus (college) | about one million college syllabi collected by the Open Syllabus Project (all subjects) | 2016 | all 20 titles in their order (manuals and textbooks have no edition with us and drop out at the matching step) |
| St. John's College first year | the whole first-year seminar list of one college's required curriculum (the page notes the list may lag recent changes) | 2026 | the works of literature, history and philosophy on the freshman list (science papers have no edition with us and drop out at matching) |
The lists measure different things: what teachers say they teach (NCTE, ALSCW, Applebee), what teachers set on one platform (Vocabulary.com), what an exam suggested (AP Lit), what college syllabi name (Open Syllabus) and what one college requires (St. John's). Each counts once, with equal weight.
Full references are in the sources file below. Lists we tried and could not read are named in the limits.
How we measured
- Counting. A work counts once per list, however many grades or years the list names it in. The place in the table is the count; we add no weights and no judgment of our own.
- Matching. A list's title counts for our edition only when the title and the author agree. Different printed names of one work are joined (for example 'Oedipus' and 'Oedipus Rex'). A translation counts as the work.
- Words and time. Words are counted in the text of our edition, measured on the editions of 21 October 2026, the house introduction left out. Reading time is the words divided by 238 words a minute, the average adult speed for silent reading of non-fiction in a 2019 review of 190 studies (Brysbaert, Journal of Memory and Language). The file also gives the time to read aloud at 150 words a minute.
- Reading grade. The Flesch-Kincaid grade level: 0.39 × words per sentence + 11.8 × syllables per word − 15.59. Easy means grade 6.5 or lower, no more than 60,000 words, and not verse or a play; challenging means grade 9.5 or higher, or 150,000 words or more; medium is everything between. A formula grade describes sentence and word length; it is not a recommended school grade or age.
- Summaries and study guides. A link is shown only where that page is open on our site today (checked on 28 October 2026).
Limits
- The lists differ in year (1989 to 2026), in method and in size. A count says how many lists name a work, not how many students read it.
- The AP Literature list counts titles the exam suggested for its open question; the College Board sets no required reading.
- The college side rests on two lists: a count of college syllabi and one college's first-year seminar, which leans to Greek works.
- Many of the most assigned books are modern and not in our library; they are named above but have no row.
- We could not read the Common Core text exemplars, the Columbia Literature Humanities list or the current Open Syllabus rankings on 28 October 2026, so they are not counted.
- The grade formula reads sentence and word length only, so plays and verse, made of short lines, score lower than they read.
Questions
Which classics are assigned most in US high schools?
On the 7 lists we counted, The Great Gatsby, Hamlet and Macbeth come first, each named by five lists, then Antigone, Frankenstein, The Odyssey, Romeo and Juliet and The Scarlet Letter. A count says how many lists name a book, not how many students read it. Romeo and Juliet leads the newest national teacher survey (NCTE, 2025).
How long does it take to read the assigned classics?
At 238 words a minute, Macbeth takes about 1 h 18 min and The Republic about 13 h 40 min. Half of the classics named by two or more lists take less than 5 h 8 min.
Why does Shakespeare score such a low reading grade?
The grade formula counts words per sentence and syllables per word. A play is made of short lines, so it scores grade 3 to 4 even though its language is hard. Read the level next to the form and the length.
