About this book
What happens when a man who trusts only gold must make room for a child?
A false charge drives linen weaver Silas Marner from his religious community at Lantern Yard. In Raveloe, he closes himself inside his cottage, finding comfort in his loom and his coins. George Eliot places his loneliness amid church bells, village gossip and the talk of the Rainbow Inn.
Nearby, the wealthy Cass family keeps troubles behind its doors. Godfrey Cass hopes to marry Nancy Lammeter, but fears revealing a secret his spiteful brother knows. As their lives draw closer to Silas's, a small child named Eppie enters the weaver's cottage on a snowy night, opening a different question about what makes life rich.

A false friend takes Silas's home
The story begins in the past, in a manufacturing town, where Silas Marner belongs to a small and strict religious community in a chapel quarter called Lantern Yard. He is a young weaver, quiet, devout and trusting. His closest friend is William Dane, a man the congregation admires. Silas is engaged to a young woman named Sarah, and his life seems set.
Then the senior member of the congregation, a deacon, falls into a deathlike sleep, and Silas sits up with him. Later the church's money is found missing, and Silas's knife is found in the deacon's bureau. Silas protests that he is innocent. He says that God knows it, and he waits to be cleared.

What is Silas Marner about?
It follows a weaver who is falsely accused by his church, leaves his home and becomes a recluse in the village of Raveloe, where he hoards gold. A child and his neighbors then change his life.
Is Silas Marner a true story?
No, it is fiction. George Eliot published it in 1861 and set it in rural England some decades earlier. She said the idea came from a vision of a linen weaver with a child, though the village and people are invented.
Is Silas Marner hard to read?
It is one of Eliot's most approachable novels. The plot is clear and the book moves steadily without much complexity.
