About this book
On a Highland shore watched by soldiers and informers, even love can pull a person toward the wrong side.
Neil Munro’s Doom Castle takes you to the Highlands after the Jacobite rising of 1745. The Stuart cause lies broken at Culloden, and the government in London wants to prevent another rising. Around a lonely castle by the sea, people face a harder question than which side they support: what do they owe to those who claim their loyalty?
Secret errands carry danger through a country where people hide their purposes and choose their words with care. Old allegiances pull against personal feelings, and a forbidden attachment makes those divisions harder to bear. Munro brings warmth to this unsettled world, with musical prose and images of water, light and stone that give its intrigue a vivid Highland setting.

A Highland shore after the rising
The novel is set in the aftermath of the 1745 rising, when the cause of the Stuart claimants had been broken on the field at Culloden. The government in London was set on making sure the Highlands could never rise again. Clans that had followed the Stuarts lived under suspicion, and those who had fled abroad dreamed of return.
Munro places his story on the western coast, in the country he knew best, with its sea lochs, steep hills and weather that changes within the hour. The land is not simply a backdrop. Its mist, tides and narrow roads shape who can travel, who can hide and who can be seen.
