Introduction

There are texts that survive the centuries by accident, preserved in the dry silence of desert caves or the dusty neglect of monastery storerooms, waiting for a world that might finally be ready to receive them. The homilies collected in this volume belong to exactly that category of rediscovered treasure — ancient sermons composed within one of history's most extraordinary religious movements, a faith that once stretched from the Atlantic coast of North Africa to the distant shores of China, and yet was so thoroughly suppressed, so deliberately erased, that for more than a millennium most of the Western world forgot it had ever existed at all.

Manichaeism — the religion founded by the prophet Mani in third-century Mesopotamia — was not a minor cult or a regional curiosity. At its height, it was a genuinely global religion, a sophisticated and intellectually rigorous system of thought that attracted followers from every stratum of society, from illiterate peasants to Roman senators, from Persian noblemen to Chinese imperial courtiers. It produced art of breathtaking beauty, philosophy of remarkable depth, and a body of scripture that Mani himself helped to compose and illustrate, making him arguably the first religious founder in history to take deliberate control of his own textual legacy. And yet, relentlessly persecuted by Christians, Zoroastrians, Muslims, and Chinese emperors alike, the tradition was driven underground, its books burned, its communities scattered, its very name turned into a term of abuse so potent that 'Manichean' survives in modern English primarily as an adjective meaning something dangerously simplistic — a bitter irony for a tradition whose actual theology was anything but simple.

The recovery of authentic Manichaean texts is one of the great scholarly adventures of the modern era. Before the twentieth century, almost everything known about Mani's teachings came from the writings of his enemies — heresiologists, polemicists, and inquisitors who had every reason to distort what they described. Then, beginning around the turn of the twentieth century, expeditions into the Tarim Basin of Central Asia, the sands of Fayum in Egypt, and the caves of Turfan began to unearth actual Manichaean manuscripts: hymns, cosmological treatises, letters, liturgical texts, and — crucially — homilies. These sermons represent something rare and precious: the living voice of Manichaean teachers speaking directly to their congregations, explaining the faith not in the abstract language of systematic theology but in the urgent, intimate register of pastoral care.

The homilies gathered here are among the most remarkable of these recovered documents. They were composed and delivered within Manichaean communities — the 'churches of light,' as the faithful sometimes called their congregations — and they address the full range of concerns that occupied the minds and hearts of those communities: the nature of the cosmos, the origin of evil, the fate of the soul, the disciplines required of the elect, the consolations available to the hearers, and the ultimate promise of a return to the World of Light from which all living souls originally descended. Reading them today, across a gap of some seventeen centuries, one is struck not by their strangeness but by their urgency. These are not dry theological exercises. They are passionate, sometimes anguished, always earnest attempts to help ordinary people make sense of a world that seemed, to those who inhabited it, almost unbearably dark.

To understand why these homilies mattered so much to their original audiences, it helps to know something about the world into which Mani was born. The year of his birth is generally given as 216 CE, in or near the city of Ctesiphon, the capital of the Parthian empire, which would soon give way to the Sasanian Persian dynasty. It was a world of extraordinary religious ferment. The old Zoroastrian traditions of Persia were being revived and systematized by the new Sasanian rulers. Christianity was spreading rapidly through the Roman Empire and beyond. Various forms of Gnosticism — those complex, dualistic religious philosophies that saw the material world as a prison or a mistake — were flourishing in cities from Alexandria to Antioch. Judaism, still reeling from the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE, was in the process of the remarkable reinvention that would produce rabbinic Judaism as we know it. Buddhism was making its way along the Silk Road from India into Central Asia. Into this extraordinary confluence of traditions, Mani was born — and he seems, from the very beginning, to have been aware of all of them.

His father, Patik, was a member of a Jewish-Christian baptismal sect in southern Mesopotamia, and Mani grew up within that community, absorbing its practices and its scriptures. But from an early age, he received what he understood to be direct divine revelation, communicated to him by a heavenly twin — a spiritual double whom he called the al-Tawm, the Companion — who guided him toward a new and universal synthesis. By his early twenties, Mani had begun to preach, and the message he proclaimed was breathtaking in its ambition: he was the final prophet in a line that included Zoroaster, the Buddha, and Jesus, and he had come to reveal the complete and uncorrupted truth that all of his predecessors had only partially disclosed. His religion would not be limited to one people or one language or one cultural tradition. It would be, as he explicitly stated, a religion for all of humanity.

The theological heart of what Mani taught is a radical dualism — not the crude, simplistic dualism that his detractors always caricatured, but a nuanced and carefully articulated account of reality as the site of a cosmic struggle between two eternal principles: Light and Darkness, Spirit and Matter, Good and Evil. These two principles did not, in Mani's account, originate from a single source. They are coeternal, coequal in power if not in nature, and their interaction — the catastrophic invasion of Light's realm by the forces of Darkness, and the subsequent long process of cosmic redemption through which the particles of Light scattered throughout the material world are gradually recovered and returned to their source — constitutes the entire drama of existence. Every human soul contains a fragment of that original Light, imprisoned in matter, longing for release. Every act of knowledge, every spiritual discipline, every moment of genuine compassion is a small act of cosmic redemption, a particle of Light freed from its material bondage.

This is the theological universe within which the homilies in this volume operate, and understanding it transforms the reading experience entirely. What might otherwise seem like strange mythological language — references to the Living Spirit, the Mother of Life, the Realm of Darkness, the Column of Glory — becomes, once the cosmological framework is grasped, a remarkably coherent and emotionally resonant symbolic vocabulary. The preachers who delivered these sermons were not simply reciting mythology. They were using a shared symbolic language to help their listeners understand their own lives: their suffering, their longing, their sense of being somehow out of place in a world that felt wrong, their hope for something better. The mythology was a map of the soul as much as a map of the cosmos.

The World the Homilies Inhabited

To read these sermons with full appreciation, it is essential to understand the social and institutional world in which they were delivered. Manichaean communities were organized around a fundamental distinction between two classes of believers: the Elect and the Hearers. The Elect — called in various languages the 'righteous,' the 'perfect,' or simply the 'saints' — were the full members of the religious order, bound by extraordinarily rigorous vows of celibacy, poverty, vegetarianism, and non-violence. They could not cook their own food, because cooking involved killing the living particles of Light contained in vegetables and grains. They could not marry or have children, because procreation was understood as trapping more Light in matter. They wandered from community to community, preaching, singing hymns, copying manuscripts, and performing the rituals that sustained the faith. They were, in the most literal sense, professional holy people, and the entire community depended on them for its spiritual life.

The Hearers, by contrast, were the lay members of the community — farmers, merchants, craftspeople, soldiers, officials — who lived ordinary lives in the world but supported the Elect through offerings of food and material resources. In return, the Elect prayed for the Hearers, performed rituals on their behalf, and — crucially — preached to them. The homilies in this collection were, for the most part, delivered to audiences that included significant numbers of Hearers: people who could not themselves observe the full discipline of the Elect but who were nonetheless earnest seekers, genuinely committed to the Manichaean vision of reality and genuinely hungry for guidance on how to live faithfully within the constraints of ordinary life.

This audience shapes everything about the style and content of these sermons. The preachers who composed them were not writing for philosophical specialists or for initiates already steeped in esoteric knowledge. They were writing for people who had day jobs, who worried about their children's futures, who struggled with temptation and doubt, who sometimes found the demands of the faith overwhelming and the promises of the faith difficult to believe. The homilies address these concerns directly, with a pastoral sensitivity that is genuinely moving. They offer not just theology but consolation, not just cosmological explanation but practical guidance, not just the promise of ultimate redemption but the assurance that every small act of faithfulness matters in the great cosmic drama of Light's return to itself.

The geographical and cultural range represented in these texts is itself remarkable. Manichaeism was, as noted above, a genuinely global religion, and its textual traditions reflect that global reach. The homilies preserved in this volume draw on manuscripts discovered in multiple locations and composed in multiple languages — Coptic, Middle Persian, Parthian, Sogdian — and they reflect the remarkable ability of the Manichaean tradition to adapt itself to radically different cultural contexts while maintaining the integrity of its core theological vision. A sermon preserved in a Coptic manuscript from Egypt and a sermon preserved in a Sogdian manuscript from Central Asia may use different imagery, different rhetorical strategies, different cultural reference points, and yet they are recognizably part of the same tradition, addressing the same fundamental questions from within the same fundamental framework.

This adaptability was not accidental. It was a deliberate feature of Manichaean missionary strategy, rooted in Mani's own insistence that his religion was universal and that its truths could be expressed in any language and any cultural idiom. Mani himself was a gifted artist and calligrapher, and he understood that the visual and aesthetic dimensions of religious communication were as important as the verbal ones. The Manichaean communities that flourished across Asia produced illuminated manuscripts of extraordinary beauty — some of the most remarkable examples of medieval book art in any tradition — and the homilies collected here were part of a broader culture of aesthetic and intellectual sophistication that belies the crude caricature of Manichaeism as a religion of world-hating gloom.

It is true, of course, that the Manichaean attitude toward the material world was deeply ambivalent. Matter, in Manichaean theology, is not simply neutral or morally indifferent: it is the product of Darkness, the medium through which the forces of evil have imprisoned the particles of Light. The body is a prison, sexuality is a trap, the natural world is a battlefield rather than a paradise. This is not a comfortable or easy theology, and the homilies do not pretend that it is. They acknowledge, with remarkable directness, the difficulty of living faithfully in a world understood as fundamentally hostile to the spirit. But they also insist, with equal directness, that this difficulty is not meaningless suffering. It is participation in the cosmic drama of redemption. Every moment of resistance to the pull of matter, every act of compassion, every prayer offered in sincerity is a moment in which Light reclaims itself from Darkness. The suffering has a purpose. The struggle has a meaning. And the end — the final restoration of all Light to its source, the extinguishing of Darkness, the return of the cosmos to its original state of luminous perfection — is certain.

This eschatological certainty is one of the most striking features of these texts, and one of the things that made Manichaeism so compelling to so many people across so many centuries. In a world of grinding poverty, political violence, epidemic disease, and existential uncertainty, the Manichaean vision offered something extraordinarily powerful: a complete explanation of why the world is the way it is, a clear account of what is being done about it, and an unshakeable assurance that it will ultimately be made right. The homilies deliver this message with a combination of intellectual rigor and emotional warmth that is, even across the vast distance of centuries and cultures, genuinely affecting.

The preachers themselves are, for the most part, anonymous — a reflection of the Manichaean emphasis on the community and the tradition rather than on individual personality. But their voices are nonetheless distinct. Some of these homilies are spare and almost austere in their style, moving through theological argument with a precision that suggests a highly educated audience capable of following complex reasoning. Others are lush and lyrical, rich with metaphor and imagery, clearly designed to move the emotions as much as to instruct the intellect. Some address specific practical concerns — how to observe the fasts, how to relate to non-Manichaean family members, how to maintain faith in the face of persecution. Others soar into pure theological speculation, tracing the contours of the cosmic drama from the first stirring of Darkness against the borders of Light to the final conflagration that will end the current age of the world.

Reading These Texts Today

Why should a twenty-first-century reader care about sermons delivered to communities that ceased to exist centuries ago, in languages that most people cannot read, within a theological framework that even specialists find challenging to reconstruct? The question is fair, and it deserves a serious answer — because the answer is not simply 'for historical curiosity,' though historical curiosity is itself a perfectly respectable motive. The answer is that these texts speak to something perennial in human experience, something that does not become less relevant with the passage of time but in many ways becomes more so.

We live, after all, in our own age of dualism — not the metaphysical dualism of Mani's cosmology, but a pervasive cultural and psychological dualism that manifests in the sense that the world is divided between forces of light and forces of darkness, that the struggle between good and evil is real and urgent, that the individual soul is caught between higher and lower impulses, that the material world offers pleasures that come at a spiritual cost. These intuitions are not unique to any one religion or culture. They appear in some form in virtually every human tradition, and they reflect something genuine about the texture of conscious experience. The Manichaean tradition explored these intuitions with unusual depth and rigor, and reading its texts can illuminate not just the history of religion but the structure of human experience itself.

There is also the matter of Manichaeism's extraordinary historical influence — an influence that has been consistently underestimated because the tradition itself was so thoroughly suppressed. The Cathars of medieval southern France, whose brutal suppression in the Albigensian Crusade of the thirteenth century is one of the darkest episodes in medieval history, were almost certainly influenced by Manichaean ideas transmitted through Bulgaria and the Balkans. The Bogomils of the Balkans, the Paulicians of Armenia, various strands of Islamic mysticism — all show traces of Manichaean influence. Even Augustine of Hippo, who became one of Christianity's most important theologians and one of Manichaeism's most formidable critics, spent nine years as a Manichaean Hearer before his conversion to Christianity, and scholars have long argued that his Manichaean formation left permanent marks on his theology — particularly his intense preoccupation with the problem of evil and his deeply ambivalent attitude toward the body and sexuality. To understand the history of Western religion and philosophy, one needs to understand Manichaeism, and to understand Manichaeism, one needs to read its actual texts rather than its enemies' descriptions of them.

Beyond the historical and philosophical dimensions, there is a purely literary case for these homilies. They are, quite simply, remarkable pieces of writing. The best of them achieve a kind of visionary intensity that places them in the company of the great mystical literature of any tradition — the sermons of Meister Eckhart, the hymns of Ephrem the Syrian, the poetry of Rumi. The Manichaean tradition had a particularly strong lyrical dimension: Mani himself composed hymns, and the tradition of sacred poetry was central to Manichaean worship. This lyrical sensibility permeates the homilies as well, even when they are ostensibly engaged in theological exposition rather than devotional expression. The language reaches, again and again, for images of light and darkness, of fire and water, of ascent and descent, of the soul's longing for its true home — images that have lost none of their power in the intervening centuries.

The editorial approach taken in this volume has been to present these texts in a way that makes them as accessible as possible to the general reader without sacrificing scholarly integrity. The translations aim for clarity and readability rather than wooden literalism, while remaining faithful to the theological precision of the originals. Explanatory notes have been provided where the text assumes knowledge that a modern reader cannot be expected to possess, but these notes have been kept as unobtrusive as possible, so as not to interrupt the reading experience. The goal throughout has been to let the texts speak for themselves — to allow the ancient preachers who composed these homilies to address the reader as directly as they once addressed their own congregations.

One of the most important things to keep in mind as you read is that these texts were not written to be read silently by individuals in private. They were written to be performed — spoken aloud before gathered communities, in the context of worship, surrounded by music and ritual and the physical presence of other believers. Something of that original communal context inevitably gets lost in the transition to the printed page, but something of it also survives in the rhetoric of the texts themselves: the direct address to the audience, the rhetorical questions, the sudden shifts of register from doctrinal exposition to passionate exhortation, the recurring refrains that would have been familiar to regular worshippers and would have created a sense of shared participation in a living tradition. Reading these texts aloud, even alone, recovers something of that original quality.

It is also worth noting what these homilies are not. They are not systematic theology, and they are not esoteric initiation texts designed to reveal hidden knowledge to a select few. The Manichaean tradition certainly had its esoteric dimensions — there were levels of initiation, degrees of knowledge, teachings reserved for the Elect that were not shared with the Hearers — but the homilies belong to the public, pastoral dimension of the tradition. They were designed to be understood, to be felt, to be taken home and lived with. Their complexity is the complexity of genuine thought earnestly applied to genuine questions, not the deliberate obscurity of texts designed to exclude. A careful reader willing to engage with unfamiliar ideas will find them, if not immediately transparent, then genuinely illuminating — texts that reward the effort they require.

The world that produced these homilies is gone. The communities that gathered to hear them have long since dispersed or been destroyed. The tradition they represent survives only in fragments, scattered across the archives of multiple countries, preserved in half a dozen languages, reconstructed by scholars working across more than a century of painstaking research. And yet the questions these texts address — Why is there suffering? What is the soul? How should we live in a world that seems indifferent or hostile to our deepest values? What hope is there for the future? — are not historical questions. They are the permanent questions of human existence, as urgent now as they were in third-century Mesopotamia or seventh-century Central Asia or thirteenth-century southern France.

Reading these ancient sermons is an act of recovery — not just of a lost tradition, but of a lost dimension of the human conversation about ultimate things. The voices preserved in these pages spoke to real people in real communities about the deepest concerns of their lives. They deserve to be heard again. They have, as you will discover, a great deal to say.

The light, as the Manichaeans never tired of insisting, has not been extinguished. It has only been waiting to be found.

Chapter 1

Since the Manichaeans themselves are gone, learning about their beliefs and practices mainly depends on finding and carefully piecing together what they left behind. Today's scholars have access to materials from four major discoveries and two separate texts. In the early 1900s, Manichaean writings and art were found in Turfan and Dunhuang in China, including items in Middle Iranian, Turkic, and Chinese. In the late 1920s, a third collection of texts, this time in Coptic, was discovered at Medinet Madi, in Egypt. Because German scholars were in charge of the Turfan and Medinet Madi finds, parts of both collections were tragically lost when Berlin was destroyed in World War 2. A fourth discovery of Manichaean materials was made in recent years at Kellis in the Dakhleh Oasis of Egypt, with texts in Coptic, Greek, and Syriac. In addition to these four major finds, the Cologne Mani Codex (a Greek text from Egypt) and the Tebessa Codex (a Latin text from Algeria) are essential sources for scholars. Furthermore, writings against the Manichaeans by Christian, Islamic, Zoroastrian, and Chinese thinkers continue to offer valuable information, especially since we can now check them against real Manichaean texts.

Throughout the 20th century, the study of Manichaeanism was mainly focused on analyzing the physical manuscripts and their language. In fact, studying these texts helped rebuild ancient languages, just as understanding those languages helped recover the Manichaean tradition. This is a slow and difficult process. Even today, about half of the surviving material is still unpublished. However, research has sped up in the last 25 years. This is thanks to a reorganized and re-energized Turfan working group in Berlin for the eastern sources, and to the new interest in the western sources created by the Cologne Mani Codex. As a result, many more sources are available, and the number of publications in the field each year has grown enormously. In addition to language studies, well-researched work that pulls all the information together has become an important part of the research. These developments led to the creation of an International Association of Manichaean Studies in the 1980s and to conferences and meetings in Europe. For the first time, scholars of Manichaean studies could meet in a forum dedicated entirely to their subject.
