About this book
What if a bottle that cures nothing can buy almost everything?
George Ponderevo grows up below stairs at Bladesover, where his mother works as housekeeper. Science offers him a way to understand the world beyond the country house. But his uncle Edward offers another path: selling Tono-Bungay, a worthless tonic backed by boundless confidence.
In H. G. Wells's satire, posters and promises turn a struggling chemist's business into an empire. George helps build it, even as he longs to invent something that works. Around him, old families give way to new money, while marriage and restless love resist the easy promises of wealth.

A boy grows up below stairs
George Ponderevo begins his story at Bladesover, a grand country house in the south of England. His mother is the housekeeper there, and George spends his childhood in the servants' rooms and the grounds. The house is run by Lady Drew, and everything about it seems fixed. There are ranks, habits and rules, and each person knows exactly where they stand.
George looks back on Bladesover as the heart of an older England. The great family sits at the top, the gentry and the clergy stand below them, and the tenants and servants carry out the work. To the boy, this seems as natural as the weather. Only later does he see that the whole arrangement was a kind of stage set, lasting only because nobody questioned it.

What is Tono-Bungay about?
It follows George Ponderevo, who helps his uncle Edward sell a worthless tonic through heavy advertising. As the fortune grows, the novel shows what fast money does to people and to a changing England.
What does Tono-Bungay mean?
It is the invented name of the patent medicine at the centre of the story. The word has no meaning of its own, which is the point, since it sounds impressive and helps sell a product that does nothing.
Is Tono-Bungay a true story?
No, it is a novel, first published in 1909. But Wells drew on real features of his time, such as patent medicines, aggressive advertising, share speculation and the decline of the old country house.
