About this book
A cow jumps over the moon, a dish runs away with a spoon, and every rhyme invites you to join in.
Mother Goose's Nursery Rhymes gathers short traditional verses made for sharing aloud. Little Miss Muffet meets an unwelcome spider. Humpty Dumpty sits on a wall. A boy finds a plum. These small dramas sit beside games for hands and feet, with sounds that invite you to chant, sing and remember.
In Hey Diddle Diddle, a cat plays the fiddle and a little dog laughs. Elsewhere, rhyme brings words like hill and Jill together with a satisfying click. No single author stands behind these verses. Their pleasures lie in lively sounds, tiny scenes and nonsense that makes animals and household objects behave in unexpected ways.

A book with no single author
Nursery rhymes belong to oral tradition. That means they lived in the memory of ordinary people long before anyone printed them. Mothers, nurses, servants and children handed them on, changing a word here and a line there. Because of this, almost every rhyme exists in several versions, and no one can say who first made up most of them.
The printed record begins in the eighteenth century. A book called Tommy Thumb's Pretty Song Book appeared in 1744 and gathered rhymes for children in one place. Around 1780 a small book called Mother Goose's Melody was published in England, and it helped fix the name Mother Goose in the minds of readers. Later editions grew larger and added pictures, and the name stuck to the whole tradition.

What is Mother Goose's Nursery Rhymes about?
It is a collection of short traditional verses for children. They include finger games, tiny stories about characters like Jack and Jill, animal rhymes and pure nonsense, all built on strong rhythm and rhyme.
Who was Mother Goose?
Mother Goose is a storytelling figure, not a proven real person. A mother goose appears in French tales published in 1697, and an English book called Mother Goose's Melody around 1780 spread the name to rhymes.
Is Humpty Dumpty an egg?
Most people say so, though the rhyme never states it. It began as a riddle, and the listener was meant to guess the answer. The egg solution is now the usual one.
