About this book

A town runs out of water, its leaders lose hope, and a widow prepares to enter the enemy camp.

In The Book of Judith, Holofernes brings Nebuchadnezzar’s army to the hill town of Bethulia. With its water cut off, the town faces surrender. Uzziah, its weary leader, gives the thirsty people a deadline. Judith, a devout widow, challenges the elders and begins a plan that places her among their enemies.

This ancient Jewish narrative moves from armies and royal demands to prayer, disguise, and deception. Judith takes her loyal maid into Holofernes’ camp, claiming to defect. The tale explores faith under pressure and courage beyond public office. Catholic and Orthodox traditions count it among deuterocanonical writings; others call it apocryphal.

A tale from the Jewish world of Hellenistic times

The Book of Judith belongs to a group of Jewish writings from the last centuries before Christ. Scholars usually date it to the Hasmonean period, in the second century BC, though no one can fix the year. The original language was probably Hebrew. What we have are translations, chiefly the Greek text in the Septuagint and the Latin text in the Vulgate, and the two differ in places.

What is the Book of Judith about?

It tells how the widow Judith saves her town of Bethulia from an Assyrian army led by the general Holofernes. She prays, dresses carefully, and goes into the enemy camp with her maid, trusting in God and in her own cunning.

Why is the Book of Judith not in the Protestant Bible?

It was not part of the Hebrew Bible that Jewish teachers settled on. Protestant churches follow that list, so they place Judith among the Apocrypha. Catholic and Orthodox churches count it as part of their Old Testament.

Is the story of Judith true?

Most scholars see it as religious fiction, not history. It calls Nebuchadnezzar king of the Assyrians, though he was Babylonian, and Bethulia is unknown. The book was probably written in the second century BC.
