About this book
Before the familiar nativity scene, this ancient story imagines a childhood set apart for Mary.
The Infancy Gospel of James begins with Joachim and Anna, a childless couple facing grief and shame. According to the story, an angel promises Anna a child, and Mary grows up in the Temple at Jerusalem. Their vow places their daughter at the heart of a life devoted to purity and sacred service.
This anonymous Christian text from the second century names James as its author, though scholars do not accept that claim. It follows Mary into Joseph’s care, through the suspicion surrounding her pregnancy, and toward a cave near Bethlehem. Along the way, it explores questions about her family and early life that Matthew and Luke leave largely unanswered.

A rich couple is shamed for having no child
The story opens with Joachim, a very wealthy man of Israel, who brings double gifts to the Temple at the great feast. A man named Reuben stops him and says he has no right to give first, because he has left no offspring in Israel. Joachim is deeply hurt. He checks the records of the twelve tribes to see whether every righteous man has had children, and finds that all have.
In his shame he does not go home. He goes into the wilderness, pitches his tent and fasts for forty days and forty nights. He says that prayer will be his food and drink until the Lord himself looks on him. The text sets him alone in the desert, like the great figures of the older scriptures.

What is the Infancy Gospel of James about?
It tells the story of Mary's parents Joachim and Anna, her birth, her childhood in the Temple, her marriage to Joseph and the birth of Jesus. It adds many details the New Testament does not give.
Why is the Protevangelium not in the Bible?
Church leaders judged it a later work, written long after the events and falsely linked to James. It never entered the New Testament canon, though many Christians still valued its stories and used them in feasts and art.
Who wrote the Protevangelium of James and when?
The author is unknown. The text claims James as its writer, but scholars place it in the second century, around the middle or later part of the 100s. It was originally written in Greek.
