About this book

Before the familiar nativity scene, this ancient story imagines a childhood set apart for Mary.

The Infancy Gospel of James begins with Joachim and Anna, a childless couple facing grief and shame. According to the story, an angel promises Anna a child, and Mary grows up in the Temple at Jerusalem. Their vow places their daughter at the heart of a life devoted to purity and sacred service.

This anonymous Christian text from the second century names James as its author, though scholars do not accept that claim. It follows Mary into Joseph’s care, through the suspicion surrounding her pregnancy, and toward a cave near Bethlehem. Along the way, it explores questions about her family and early life that Matthew and Luke leave largely unanswered.

What you’ll discover

  • Joachim and Anna’s longing Meet the grieving parents whose prayers and promise begin this account of Mary’s life.
  • A childhood in the Temple Explore the story’s vivid image of Mary among lamps, sacred vows, and angelic care.
  • Joseph’s difficult charge Follow an elderly widower chosen as guardian, then troubled by a pregnancy he cannot explain.
  • The cave near Bethlehem Encounter a nativity account shaped by wonder, stillness, and a bewildered midwife’s witness.
  • Traditions beyond the Gospels Discover details of Mary’s story that become familiar in Christian art and church feasts.

Is it for you?

This is for readers curious about where the traditions of Mary's parents and childhood come from, and for anyone studying early Christianity or religious art. Readers who want a work that matches the four Gospels in tone and restraint may find its devotional style less suited.

What is the Infancy Gospel of James about?

It tells the story of Mary's parents Joachim and Anna, her birth, her childhood in the Temple, her marriage to Joseph and the birth of Jesus. It adds many details the New Testament does not give.

Why is the Protevangelium not in the Bible?

Church leaders judged it a later work, written long after the events and falsely linked to James. It never entered the New Testament canon, though many Christians still valued its stories and used them in feasts and art.

Who wrote the Protevangelium of James and when?

The author is unknown. The text claims James as its writer, but scholars place it in the second century, around the middle or later part of the 100s. It was originally written in Greek.
