About this book

What draws generations of readers to one Gospel harmony—and why do churches later set it aside?

The Diatessaron offers one continuous account of Jesus’ life, drawing on Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Attributed to Tatian, a Christian writer from Syria who studies under Justin Martyr in Rome, it offers a way through the Gospel accounts without stopping to compare them. This summary explores its contents, its readers, and its place in early Christian life.

The story begins with John’s words about the Word, then follows teachings, miracles, and events in a shared sequence. For generations, Syriac-speaking churches read this harmony, before church leaders replace it with the four separate Gospels. No complete text survives in its first form; ancient commentaries, translations, and a small early fragment preserve traces of the work.

Tatian blends four Gospels into one

Tatian was born in the Roman province of Assyria, which in his day meant the Syrian lands east of the Mediterranean. He travelled west, studied Greek learning, and in Rome became a student of the Christian teacher Justin Martyr. After Justin died, Tatian wrote works of his own, and later he returned to the East. Church writers say the Diatessaron was his work, and scholars generally date it to about 170.

What is the Diatessaron?

It is a harmony of the four Gospels, made by combining Matthew, Mark, Luke and John into one continuous account of the life and teaching of Jesus. The word comes from Greek and means through four.

Who wrote the Diatessaron and when?

Church tradition and most scholars name Tatian, a Syrian Christian who had studied in Rome. It is usually dated to about 170. No complete copy of the first form survives.

Why is the Diatessaron not in the Bible?

Churches settled on four separate Gospels as their accepted set. The Diatessaron was a blend of them, not a fifth Gospel, and by the fifth century Syriac bishops replaced it with the four.
