About this book
How does a community face the end of the world—and whom can it trust?
The Apocalypse of Pseudo-Ephraem is a short Christian sermon that addresses a community with urgent warnings. According to the text, wars, hunger, and disease signal that history nears its close. At its center stands the Antichrist, a false messiah who deceives many before the return of Christ.
The writer is unknown, though the sermon bears the name of Ephraem the Syrian, a deacon and poet. It survives in Latin and draws on Daniel, Paul's second letter to the Thessalonians, and Revelation. Medieval readers copy it, and preachers draw on such texts to describe the last days.

A Latin sermon under a borrowed name
Ephraem the Syrian was a deacon and poet who wrote in Syriac and died in 373. He was so admired that many later works were placed under his name. The Apocalypse of Pseudo-Ephraem is one of them. It is usually known by a Latin title that speaks of the last times, the Antichrist and the end of the world.
The text comes to us in Latin, and it exists in more than one version. Medieval manuscripts carry it, and scholars edited it in the nineteenth century. Related sermons in other languages also circulate under the same name, so readers should be careful not to mix them up.

What is the Apocalypse of Pseudo-Ephraem about?
It is a short Christian sermon about the end of the world. It describes wars and hardship, the rise of the Antichrist, a time of tribulation and the return of Christ, and it urges listeners to repent and stay faithful.
Did Ephraem the Syrian write it?
Scholars do not think so. Ephraem died in 373 and wrote in Syriac, while this sermon survives in Latin. His name was attached to it later, so the real author is called Pseudo-Ephraem.
When was the Apocalypse of Pseudo-Ephraem written?
Scholars disagree. Some date it between the fourth and sixth centuries, and others place it later. Its manuscripts are medieval, and more than one version exists, which makes a firm date hard to give.
