About this book
How does a community face the end of the world—and whom can it trust?
The Apocalypse of Pseudo-Ephraem is a short Christian sermon that addresses a community with urgent warnings. According to the text, wars, hunger, and disease signal that history nears its close. At its center stands the Antichrist, a false messiah who deceives many before the return of Christ.
The writer is unknown, though the sermon bears the name of Ephraem the Syrian, a deacon and poet. It survives in Latin and draws on Daniel, Paul's second letter to the Thessalonians, and Revelation. Medieval readers copy it, and preachers draw on such texts to describe the last days.

A sermon written under a borrowed name
This work is a short sermon about the end of the world, and the Latin text is the version meant here. Its manuscripts ascribe it to Ephraem the Syrian, the fourth century poet and teacher honoured as a saint in both the Eastern and the Western churches. Scholars broadly agree that he did not write it.
Putting a famous name on a new work was a common habit in the ancient world. Historians call it pseudepigraphy. It was often a way of claiming a teacher's authority, not a trick to cheat the reader. The letters attributed to Paul and the apocalypses given to Ezra or Baruch belong to the same tradition. Ephraem's hymns were translated into many languages, so his name was a useful one to borrow.

What is the Apocalypse of Pseudo-Ephraem about?
It is a short sermon on the end of the world. It describes war and moral decay, the fall of Rome, the rise of the Antichrist, three and a half years of tribulation, the prophets Enoch and Elijah, and the coming of Christ.
Did Ephraem the Syrian really write it?
Scholars broadly agree that he did not. The manuscripts attach his name, but the Latin text is usually dated to the late sixth or early seventh century, long after the fourth century saint. The real author is unknown.
Why is it called Pseudo-Ephraem?
Pseudo means falsely attributed. The name marks a work that circulated under Ephraem's name though a later writer composed it. Writing under a revered name was a common ancient practice, often meant to honour a tradition.
