Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) was a Polish-British writer, regarded as one of the greatest novelists in the English language — remarkable given that English was his third language, learned in adulthood. His dark, psychologically penetrating fiction explored moral ambiguity, isolation, and the thin line between civilisation and savagery.
His most famous work, Heart of Darkness, follows a journey up the Congo River into the horrors of colonial exploitation and the human capacity for evil; it later inspired the film Apocalypse Now. Other major works include Lord Jim, Nostromo, The Secret Agent, and Typhoon, many drawing on his years as a sailor.
