About this book

What if one wrong turn leads to a moment you spend your youth trying to recover?

François Seurel lives at the rural school where his father teaches, in a world made narrow by a childhood leg problem. Then Augustin Meaulnes loses his way on an errand with a horse and cart. He reaches an isolated estate preparing for an unusual wedding, and meets Yvonne de Galais.

Back at school, Meaulnes shares his adventure with François. Together, they turn roads, landmarks, and scraps of memory into clues to the estate. In Alain-Fournier’s The Lost Estate, a brief encounter grows into a consuming dream. New friendships and promises draw the boys onward, while ordinary life falls under the shadow of that first visit.

What is The Lost Estate about?

The Lost Estate follows Augustin Meaulnes’s attempt to find a country estate where he attended a strange celebration and met Yvonne de Galais. Told by his friend François, it is about first love, friendship, and the difficulty of separating a real person from an ideal memory.
