About this book
What if one wrong turn leads to a moment you spend your youth trying to recover?
François Seurel lives at the rural school where his father teaches, in a world made narrow by a childhood leg problem. Then Augustin Meaulnes loses his way on an errand with a horse and cart. He reaches an isolated estate preparing for an unusual wedding, and meets Yvonne de Galais.
Back at school, Meaulnes shares his adventure with François. Together, they turn roads, landmarks, and scraps of memory into clues to the estate. In Alain-Fournier’s The Lost Estate, a brief encounter grows into a consuming dream. New friendships and promises draw the boys onward, while ordinary life falls under the shadow of that first visit.

A Stranger Comes to Sainte-Agathe
François Seurel lives at the school of Sainte-Agathe, where his father is headmaster. One Sunday in November, a rich widow arrives with her son Augustin Meaulnes, a tall seventeen-year-old in a peasant's felt hat. She wants to board him at the school.
While his mother talks, Meaulnes wanders the attics and finds a blackened wheel left from the fireworks of Bastille Day. He lights it in the covered playground and takes François by the hand. The timid boy does not flinch as red and white stars burst around them.
