About this book

In a village in the Bavarian Alps, ordinary neighbours take sacred roles, and the stage meets life.

Wilhelmine von Hillern’s On the Cross is a short dramatic tale set in the world of Oberammergau’s Passion Play. Here, villagers perform the last days of Jesus for visitors who come from far away. The village and its old promise frame a story where theatre, community and religious feeling meet.

A novelist and former actress, Hillern knows both the stage and Alpine village life. Her tale takes the shape of a play, with openly expressed feelings, direct moral questions and scenes that build toward a climax. Expect the pace and manner of the nineteenth century: the appeal lies in strong emotions and the meeting of performance with everyday life.
