On the Cross in short
On the Cross follows a woman who goes to see a famous village play out of curiosity and finds a longing she cannot name. She is the Countess von Wildenau, and the man who plays Christ is Joseph Freyer, a poor woodcarver with deep eyes. Between them stand a village that gives up comfort for its ideals, a prince who offers safe happiness, and a father whose debts push her toward secrecy.
What On the Cross is about
What would it take to make a woman who owns palaces kneel before a rough wooden cross? That question drives On the Cross, a novel by Wilhelmine von Hillern. She builds it around the Passion Play of Oberammergau, the Bavarian village where farmers and woodcarvers act out the last days of Christ once every ten years.
Countess Madeleine von Wildenau, young, rich and bored, arrives among the pilgrims with a prince who wants to marry her. On the road she glimpses a man with sorrowful eyes on a cliff, and she cannot forget him. You get a love story, a portrait of a village that gives up comfort for its ideals, and an argument between faith and reason.
Who it’s for. You will enjoy this book if you love passionate romances with a spiritual heart, vivid mountain villages, and characters who argue about art, faith and class.

A rich countess glimpses a man on a cliff
On a Friday evening a line of carriages winds up the Ettal mountain toward Oberammergau. In the finest sit Countess Madeleine von Wildenau and Prince Emil, her most patient suitor. She is a widow, famous for her beauty, and tired of a society that has nothing left to show her. The prince offers his hand, and she cannot answer.
Then the sun breaks through the clouds and lights a man on a rocky peak. He has long black hair and mournful eyes, and a thorny branch sways above his forehead like a crown. Their eyes meet, and neither looks away first. Then he is gone into the forest. Later, in the storm, a tall figure strides past her carriage and does not answer a servant's call.
She tells the prince she longs for a man who is both strong and simple at heart. She admits that an unknown rival stands between them, though he lives only in her imagination. A longing without a name can outweigh the safest offer.
