About this book
In a city that makes cloth, hunger and ambition threaten to tear a mill worker’s family apart.
Mary Barton dreams of a lady’s life beyond the dressmaker’s shop where she works. Jem Wilson, a steady young engineer, loves her, but Harry Carson, a mill owner’s son, offers flattering attention. In Elizabeth Gaskell’s Manchester, Mary’s hopes for something better draw her toward choices with painful stakes.
Her father, John Barton, sees wages fall while the rich live at ease. Grief and hunger harden his anger, and conflict grows between mill owners and workers. Around them, neighbours share what little they have. Gaskell brings love, family strain and crime into a close view of people struggling to live.

“a Book seeming to take its place far above the ordinary garbage of Novels”
In short
What would you do if the people who make a city rich could not feed their own children? In Manchester in the 1830s and 1840s, that question faced thousands of cotton workers every winter.

Two weavers talk of a missing sister
The novel opens on a May holiday in Green Heys Fields, a patch of farmland near Manchester. Factory girls stroll beside young men, and families carry their babies along the footpath. Two working men meet at a stile. They are John Barton and George Wilson.
Barton's wife, also called Mary, is close to giving birth and cannot stop weeping. Her younger sister Esther has vanished. She was last seen in her best clothes, climbing into a hired coach. Barton fears she has run off with a man.
