A rumor becomes a story
Most versions open in Jerusalem, in the days of a ruler such as Queen Helene, or in the time of the Hasmonean kings, depending on the manuscript. The date shifts from copy to copy, and that alone shows the text is not trying to be history. The story begins with a young woman named Miriam, the same name as Mary in the Gospels. She is engaged to a man named Yohanan, who is devout and learned.
Near her home lives a neighbor named Yosef ben Pandera, sometimes written Pandera or Pantera. The name matters. Earlier writers, including the Christian author Origen in his reply to the pagan critic Celsus, record a claim that Jesus was the son of a soldier called Panthera. So the Toledot Yeshu did not invent that name. It took an older rumor and built a whole plot around it.
