About this book
What if every story from Creation to Sinai has its place in a sacred calendar?
The Book of Jubilees retells Genesis and the opening chapters of Exodus through a revelation to Moses. According to the text, an angel dictates history from heavenly tablets on Mount Sinai. Adam, Enoch, Noah, Abraham and their descendants appear within a framework that gives each event its appointed time.
This ancient Jewish work does more than expand familiar stories. It presents a 364-day calendar, fixes festivals and Sabbaths, and portrays the patriarchs as keepers of the law before Sinai. From Eden and the Watchers to Joseph in Egypt, its stories explore covenant, obedience and the ordering of human life.

A lost book that survived in Ethiopia
The Book of Jubilees was written in Hebrew, most likely between about 200 and 100 years before the Common Era. Most scholars favor a date near the middle of the second century. The Hebrew original was not preserved in the main line of Jewish tradition. For many centuries the book was known in the wider world only through short quotations and mentions.
Early Christian writers did know it. They sometimes called it the Little Genesis, a name that points to how closely it follows the first book of the Bible. Greek and Latin writers quoted it, and a large piece of a Latin translation survives. A Syriac writer also quoted from it. Yet no complete Greek or Latin text has come down to us.

What is the Book of Jubilees about?
It retells Genesis and early Exodus as a revelation given to Moses on Mount Sinai. An angel dictates the history from creation onward, dates events in periods of forty-nine years, and links the stories to laws, feasts and the calendar.
Why is the Book of Jubilees not in the Bible?
It was not included in the Jewish canon fixed by the rabbis or in most Christian Old Testaments. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church does include it. Scholars also note that its 364-day calendar differed from the lunar calendar later used in Judaism.
What is a jubilee in this book?
A jubilee is a period of forty-nine years, made of seven weeks of years of seven years each. The book dates every event by jubilee, week and year, drawing on the jubilee law in Leviticus.
