About this book
What happens when a prophet’s warning meets a hostile throne—and his vision reaches beyond the world?
The Ascension of Isaiah joins a story of persecution to a vision of heaven. In its earthly account, Isaiah warns that the reign after Hezekiah will bring corruption and danger. Hezekiah’s son Manasseh represents a turn toward hostility, placing the prophet’s teaching and steadfast faith under threat.
In the visionary account, an angel guides Isaiah through seven heavens, each more glorious than the last. According to the text, he witnesses heavenly worship and receives visions of Christ’s descent into the human world. Earthly rulers, hostile spirits, and warnings about failing faith connect these heavenly scenes to religious communities under pressure.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1 of 5
The Ascension of Isaiah brings together two kinds of religious storytelling: an account of a prophet under threat and a vision of the world above. Its fullest surviving form is in Ethiopic, the ancient literary language of Ethiopia. Portions also survive in Greek, Latin, and Slavonic. Scholars generally place its formation in the early centuries of Christianity, though they disagree about the dates of its separate parts and their assembly. Much of its material is commonly dated to the first and second centuries.

What is The Ascension of Isaiah about?
The Ascension of Isaiah combines a story of Isaiah’s persecution under King Manasseh with a Christian vision of seven heavens. It links a prophet’s suffering on earth with heavenly events, especially Christ’s descent into the world and the defeat of hostile spiritual powers.
Who wrote The Ascension of Isaiah, and when?
Its authors are anonymous. Scholars regard it as a composite work rather than a book written by the historical Isaiah. Much of its material is commonly dated to the first and second centuries, but the dates of individual sections and their combination remain debated.
Why is The Ascension of Isaiah not in the Bible?
The work did not receive the widespread recognition that established the books of most biblical canons. Early Christians nevertheless knew and used it, and Ethiopian Christians preserved its fullest text. Its exclusion does not mean that it had no religious value or historical influence.
