About this book
What if the woman who saves your life holds a promise that stands between you and love?
Beside the great river in Louisiana, an old, blind Natchez man named Chactas tells a young European exile, René, about his youth. His memory returns to captivity and to Atala, the young Muscogee woman who frees him. Together they flee through the forests of North America, where their escape becomes a story of love tested by religious duty.
In François-René de Chateaubriand’s short novel, the wilderness surrounds every tender moment: magnolia groves, wide rivers, waterfalls, and moonlit nights. Yet Atala carries a secret she struggles to share. Her sacred vow pulls against her love for Chactas, bringing a painful question into view: what do we owe to the person we love, and what do we owe to faith?

An old blind sage begins his story
The tale opens on the Mississippi, which the author paints as the Nile of these wildernesses. Wild buffalo roam the western prairies, while the eastern bank is a crowded forest of magnolia, vine and palm.
A fleet of canoes carries Natchez hunters north for a beaver hunt. Their leader is Chactas, an old man who has gone blind, and a young girl guides him through the hills. Years earlier, a grave injustice condemned him to the Marseilles galleys, but he was later released and brought before Louis XIV. He saw Versailles and came home to the forests with the memory of a whole other world.
