About this book

What if you long to change your country, but doubt your own place in the cause?

In the Russia of the late 1860s, Alexei Nezhdanov carries revolutionary hopes into the comfortable Sipyagin household. A sensitive student and secret poet, he believes in change but questions his fitness for it. There he meets Marianna Sinetskaya, a poor relation who wants more than shelter and comfort: she wants a life that matters.

In Virgin Soil, Ivan Turgenev brings love and politics into the same uneasy rooms. Marianna longs to serve a cause, while the practical mill manager Solomin trusts steady work over sudden uprisings. Around them, radicals argue and the gentry guard their comfortable lives. The question is not only how to change Russia, but how to turn belief into action.

What you’ll discover

“This beautiful novel of “Virgin Soil,” which must be read through, appeared on the very eve of the great Nihilist suit against the One Hundred and Ninety-three.”

What is Virgin Soil about?

It follows Alexai Nejdanov, a young poet and radical, who takes a tutor's job at a landowner's estate in 1868. There he falls in love with the proud Mariana and joins a plan to rouse the peasants, doubting it all the while.

What does the title Virgin Soil mean?

The epigraph says virgin soil needs a deep plow, not a surface one. It suggests that reaching the Russian people takes patient, thorough work, and it hints that the young idealists are only scratching the top.

Who is Solomin in Virgin Soil?

Solomin is a calm, capable engineer who manages a cotton factory. He shares the radicals' goals but prefers slow, practical work, and he shelters Nejdanov and Mariana at his factory.
