About this book

What does loyalty mean when both armies believe you serve the enemy?

In James Fenimore Cooper’s The Spy, the roads of Westchester County lie between British and American lines. Neither army holds this Neutral Ground, and lawless bands roam it. Harvey Birch carries his peddler’s pack from farm to farm, crossing the lines while both sides question his purpose.

At the Locusts, Mr. Wharton wants only to keep his family safe. But his son Henry, a British captain, returns in disguise and faces grave danger. Frances Wharton struggles to protect her brother while loving Peyton Dunwoodie, an American cavalry officer whose duty pulls against his heart.

A family caught between two armies

The story opens in 1780 at the Locusts, the country house of Mr. Wharton, a gentleman of New York. He is a quiet man who wants no part in the war. His sympathies lean toward the Crown, yet he has not taken up arms for it, and he hopes that staying calm will keep his property safe. He lives with two daughters, Sarah and Frances, and a servant named Caesar Thompson, who is loyal to the family and speaks in a dialect Cooper renders on the page.

What is The Spy by James Fenimore Cooper about?

It is a novel set in 1780 in Westchester County, New York. A peddler named Harvey Birch is suspected of spying, while a divided family and a young cavalry officer deal with loyalty and duty during the Revolutionary War.

What is the Neutral Ground in The Spy?

The Neutral Ground is the stretch of Westchester County lying between the British lines and the American lines. Neither army fully controlled it, so armed gangs and raiders preyed on local farms.

Is The Spy based on a true story?

The setting and the war are real, but the characters are fiction. Cooper wrote it in 1821, reportedly inspired by a tale of a patriot spy. Harvey Birch is an invented figure, not a record of one person.
