About this book

Light breaks through dark skies, and small human figures stand before the vast events of the Bible.

In The Doré Bible Gallery, Complete, Gustave Doré presents biblical stories through landscapes, crowds, and sharp contrasts of light and darkness. The pictures follow the order of the Bible, drawing on the Old Testament, the Apocrypha, and the New Testament. This is a gallery to explore with your eyes, rather than a continuous text.

The journey opens with the creation of light in Genesis and follows Abraham’s family, Jacob, Joseph, and Moses. Prophets stand against kings and crowds. The Gospel scenes depict Jesus’s birth, teaching, healing, arrest, and death, before the gallery turns to the apostles and the visions of Revelation. Throughout, Doré places human figures within scenes of immense scale.

What you’ll discover

  • Light against darkness See how bright beams and dark skies give biblical scenes their striking drama.
  • Journeys through dry country Follow the patriarchs past tents, wells, and caravans across Doré’s vast landscapes.
  • Prophets facing the crowd Look closely at lone figures who speak against the kings and crowds around them.
  • The Gospel in pictures Explore scenes of Jesus’s life through Doré’s black-and-white depictions of the Gospel narratives.
  • Apostles and final visions Follow the early followers of Jesus through preaching, travel, and prison, then encounter Revelation’s visions.

In short

What does Eve see when she first opens her eyes? She stands shy and graceful in the dim light of dawn, among the leaves of Eden.
