About this book
What happens when love is treated as worthless, and a daughter refuses to let a wrong stand?
In Slighted Love, Mrs. Alex. McVeigh Miller brings together scorned affection, family secrets, and a young woman's search for justice. At its heart is a daughter who will not accept the wrong before her. Her struggle gives this romance its emotional pull: she must prove her worth while holding on to the hope of truth.
This is the world of Victorian sentimental fiction, where love faces painful tests and goodness matters. Miller's romance invites you into domestic drama shaped by betrayal and misunderstanding. The appeal lies in strong feeling and clear moral stakes: the hurt of being slighted, the burden of secrets, and the wish to see a wrong set right.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A daughter arrives with a secret purpose
The story opens in an old Italian garden. Seventeen-year-old Italy Vale asks her mother why they live such lonely lives and why people seem to shun them. Mrs. Vale finally tells her the truth. Italy's father was murdered in his library at the family's seaside home in Winthrop, near Boston, and Mrs. Vale was tried for the crime. The jury acquitted her, but the crowd hissed, and public opinion has followed her ever since.
Mrs. Vale adds that her husband's wealth was tied by inheritance to male heirs. Because Italy was a girl, it passed to a distant cousin, a young man named Francis Murray. All that remained for mother and daughter was a small private fortune. Mrs. Vale believes some unknown enemy keeps spreading her story from town to town, and she has kept every paper from the trial for her daughter to read.
