About this book

In a village enclosed by snow and mountains, two people love the same being—and see someone different.

In Honoré de Balzac’s mystical novel Seraphita, a remote Norwegian village holds a mystery that ordinary distinctions cannot contain. Minna, the pastor’s daughter, sees Seraphitus as a man. Wilfrid sees Seraphita as a woman. Both seek closeness and understanding, yet the being they love points them toward a love beyond possession and bodily desire.

Above the village, Minna and Seraphitus climb through a snowy mountain landscape that reveals the distance between them. Below, Pastor Becker introduces the ideas of Swedish religious thinker Emanuel Swedenborg. Within this spiritual framework, earthly things carry deeper meanings, and human life is only one stage of existence. Love and religious doubt meet the longing to rise beyond ordinary life.

What is Seraphita about?

Seraphita follows two people who love the same mysterious being but perceive that being differently. Set in Norway, the novel uses their frustrated desire to ask how earthly love relates to spiritual love, and whether the soul can pass beyond the limits of ordinary human existence.

Is Seraphita a man or a woman?

Minna sees the central figure as male and calls the figure Seraphitus; Wilfrid sees the figure as female, Seraphita. Balzac makes this double perception central to the book. Seraphita represents a spiritual unity that exceeds the division between male and female.

What does Swedenborg have to do with Seraphita?

Emanuel Swedenborg supplies much of the novel’s religious framework. His teachings connect the material world with spiritual realities and describe existence beyond bodily life. Pastor Becker discusses him, while Seraphita gives dramatic form to the possibility of rising from human attachment toward angelic existence.
