About this book
Beyond the familiar Hudson River, a wider world waits on the shores of Nova Scotia.
In Evelyn Raymond's Dorothy's Travels, a young heroine leaves home to see more of the world. Her journey leads from the Hudson River in New York toward the coast of Nova Scotia. Rivers and harbors, trains and steamers give this cheerful adventure its changing scenery, while new places and people invite Dorothy to look beyond the familiar.
This is a gentle travel tale, where courage, kindness and good sense matter more than sharp edges. Dorothy stands at the heart of a story about discovery and learning something about herself along the way. The pleasure lies in following her north, sharing the sense of possibility that comes when home gives way to a wider horizon.

A small act of love begins the trip
The story opens at a Hudson River dock on a summer morning. Dorothy is about to sail toward New York, and then Nova Scotia, where she will grow strong for another school year. Her friend Alfaretta has come just to wave. At the last second she cannot bear to let Dorothy go, so she stays aboard.
Alfaretta has only four cents in her purse, and the fare is fifteen. She is sure the captain will drop her into the river. Dorothy runs to ask Miss Greatorex for money. The teacher is partly deaf and guards the girls' purses on strict orders. Dorothy snatches both purses without asking, which is generous but careless.

What is Dorothy's Travels about?
It follows Dorothy Chester on a summer trip from the Hudson River to Nova Scotia with her friend Molly, the Judge, Aunt Lucretia, and a teacher. Lost purses, fog, ox carts, a sailboat, and a farm all fill the journey.
Who is Dorothy Chester in this book?
She is a brown-eyed girl from the Rhinelander Academy who was left on a doorstep as a baby and raised by a loving couple. She plays the violin, loves flowers, and wonders who her real parents were.
Do I need to read the earlier Dorothy books first?
No. The author briefly explains who Dorothy is and what happened at the Academy, so a new reader can follow along easily. Short chapters and clear scenes make it simple to pick up.
