About this book

What if falling in love reveals as much about your mind as it does about the person you desire?

In On Love, Stendhal turns the pain of unreturned passion for Mathilde Dembowski into a close study of feeling. Rather than offer a confession, he watches love like a naturalist watching a plant: how it begins, grows, feeds on hope and doubt, and fades.

His inquiry moves through short chapters, notes, anecdotes, and sharp opinions about men and women. He distinguishes four kinds of love and traces passion through seven stages. Then he looks beyond the lover, asking how climate, government, and education shape feelings that seem so deeply private.

What you’ll discover

  • Four kinds of love Explore the different feelings Stendhal gathers beneath a single, familiar word.
  • The mind's beloved Encounter crystallization, his striking account of how the mind builds the person it loves.
  • Passion taking shape Follow seven stages beginning with admiration, and examine the part hope and fear play.
  • Love beyond the individual Consider why love differs across nations, shaped by climate, government, and education.
  • A plea for education Examine Stendhal's argument that denying women a good education harms both sexes.

Who will love it

For readers who enjoy sharp psychology, French wit and true stories of lovers, and for anyone who has ever built a perfect picture of someone in their head.

Love comes in four kinds, and only one is passion

Stendhal begins by sorting love into four kinds, because he wants to know what he studies. They are passionate love, love as a taste, physical love and vanity love. The first is his true concern. The others appear by contrast, so the real thing stands out.

What is On Love by Stendhal about?

It is a study of how romantic passion begins, grows and ends. Stendhal describes four kinds of love, seven stages of falling in love, and the process he calls crystallization, using anecdotes from Italy, France and Germany.

What does crystallization mean in Stendhal's On Love?

It is the mind's habit of finding new perfections in the person you love. Stendhal takes the image from a bare branch left in a Salzburg salt mine, which comes back covered in glittering crystals.

What are the four kinds of love Stendhal describes?

He names passionate love, love as a taste, physical love and vanity love. Passionate love is the rare, all-absorbing kind. The others rest on wit, appetite or the wish to be seen with an admired partner.
