On Love in short

Stendhal claims that love is a natural process with stages. A person admires, hopes, and then the mind begins crystallization, covering the beloved in imagined perfections. Doubt makes the process stronger, and beauty becomes a promise of happiness, so even flaws grow dear.

What On Love is about

Picture a bare branch tossed into a salt mine near Salzburg. Months later it comes out covered in glittering crystals, so thick that the twigs cannot be recognized. Stendhal sees the same thing in a man in love. The mind takes an ordinary person and covers her in diamonds.

On Love is a study of passion by the French writer Stendhal, whose real name was Henri Beyle. He printed it in 1822 and calls it a cold, scientific description of an illness of the soul. You get a map of love from the first glance to full passion, a name for each stage, and lively tales of lovers in many lands.

Who it’s for. For readers who enjoy sharp psychology, French wit and true stories of lovers, and for anyone who has ever built a perfect picture of someone in their head.

The 10 key ideas

Love comes in four kinds, and only one is passion

Stendhal begins by sorting love into four kinds, because he wants to know what he studies. They are passionate love, love as a taste, physical love and vanity love. The first is his true concern. The others appear by contrast, so the real thing stands out.

Passionate love is the rare one. His examples are the Portuguese nun and Héloïse writing to Abelard. It sweeps a person past every interest and every calculation. Those who feel it may look foolish in the drawing room, yet they know pleasures that cold hearts never reach.

Love as a taste belongs to the Paris of about 1760. Everything in it is pleasant and rose colored. Physical love is the hunter's pleasure, and vanity love is winning a fashionable woman the way one buys a fine horse. Yet all four are born, live and die by the same laws.

Name the kind of love you feel before you judge it.
