About this book
What holds a crew together when a sick shipmate stirs pity, suspicion, and unrest?
In Joseph Conrad’s short novel, the Narcissus sails from Bombay towards London around the Cape of Good Hope. Aboard is James Wait, a proud black sailor from the West Indies. As he lies ill in his bunk, the men bring him food, tend him, and begin to divide over his needs.
A gale throws the ship on her side, testing men who already struggle with trust and authority. Captain Allistoun must hold them together while Donkin turns their moods against the officers. Beyond the storm, Conrad explores a harder question: how much can people depend on one another when compassion and doubt pull in different directions?

A crew gathers in Bombay harbor at night
The story opens on the deck of the Narcissus, a British sailing ship at anchor in Bombay harbor. It is nine at night, and the chief mate, Mr. Baker, wants to muster the crew before the ship sails at dawn.
In the forecastle, where the crew lives, the noise is loud and the bunks are crowded. Little Belfast tells wild tales with dancing eyes. In the middle sits Singleton, the oldest seaman aboard, tattooed, white bearded, and wearing spectacles. He has spent nearly forty-five years at sea.

What is The Nigger of the Narcissus about?
It follows one voyage of a British sailing ship from Bombay to London. A sailor named James Wait says he is dying, and the crew's pity, doubt, and fear shape everything that happens on board, through storm, hunger, and quarrel.
Why does the book have that title?
The word was in common use when Conrad wrote the book in the 1890s and is offensive now. The story uses it in the crew's mouths to show their prejudice, and Wait himself is shown as proud, frightening, and human.
Who is Singleton in the book?
Singleton is the oldest able seaman, tattooed and white-bearded, who has spent most of his life at sea. He speaks little, steers through the worst storm, and represents the silent, steady sailors of an older age.
