About this book

Far from towns and courts, what holds people together when weather, distance, and their own hearts put them to the test?

In Northern Lights, Gilbert Parker brings you to a Canadian frontier of rivers, forests, trading posts, and long winters. These short adventure tales follow people who live far from help. The land shapes their choices, while love and duty pull at hearts already tested by distance.

Loyalty sits at the centre of this world. With few laws and few neighbours, a person's word becomes a form of order. Parker's frontier is vivid and romantic: feelings run strong, comfort matters less than loyalty, and love meets a world that stands in its way.

What you’ll discover

  • A land that tests Enter great northern spaces where distance from help gives every choice a sharper edge.
  • The weight of loyalty Explore what a person's word means where laws and neighbours are few.
  • Love against distance Follow strong feelings as duty and the demands of frontier life stand against them.
  • A romantic frontier See the Canadian North through Parker's vivid, romantic vision of the country he leaves behind.
  • A stubborn wild spirit Meet people whose hearts face tests as demanding as the weather around them.

Is it for you?

This book suits readers who enjoy old-fashioned adventure, frontier settings and short tales of love and duty. It may suit you less if you want fast modern pacing or a realistic, critical account of the Canadian North.

The far North is the real setting

Parker wrote about a country of great spaces. The North in his fiction is a place where a person can be a long way from help, and where the land shapes what people do. Rivers, snow, forest and open sky are never only a backdrop. They press on every choice.
