About this book

What if the poet you love is not the man putting his heart into your letters?

In Le Havre, Modeste Mignon lives quietly by the sea, filling her mind with romances and dreams of grand passion. She chooses Melchior de Canalis, a celebrated Paris poet she knows only through his verse, and writes to him in secret. But the replies come from someone else.

Ernest de la Brière, Canalis's modest and sensitive helper, answers with feelings of his own. Around Modeste, family guardians and suitors have plans for her future. In Honoré de Balzac's romance, the search for love meets the claims of money, rank and reputation. How can she judge a heart when fame makes such a dazzling disguise?

“A writer of the 20th century may also, on occasion, feel imprisoned by his time, and reading the great 19th century novelists – Balzac, Dickens, Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky – may bring on a certain nostalgia.”

What is Modeste Mignon about?

It tells of a young woman in Havre who writes to a famous poet in secret, and of the people who guard, deceive and court her. It mixes comedy, letters and a close look at money and marriage.

Who is Modeste Mignon in the novel?

She is the younger daughter of a ruined merchant, living at a cottage called the Chalet with her blind mother. She is clever, well read in three languages, and determined to choose her own husband.

Is Modeste Mignon part of the Human Comedy?

Yes, Balzac placed it in his great cycle of novels about French society. Characters such as Canalis, Desplein and the Duchesse de Chaulieu appear elsewhere, but the story stands well on its own.
