About this book
What if the man who breaks every rule is the only one who remembers how to live?
A wild wind brings Innocent Smith to Beacon House, where tired guests have settled into familiar habits and gloomy opinions. He climbs trees, fires a pistol, and shakes the household awake. Michael Moon finds his cheer both stirring and annoying; Rosamund Hunt begins to question her settled view of life.
Then stories of Smith's past turn delight into suspicion. Dr. Warner sees sickness in his strange behaviour and wants him confined. The guests hold a trial in the garden, weighing grave accusations against this joyful stranger. In Manalive, G. K. Chesterton turns farce into a playful argument about sanity, habit, and the courage to welcome ordinary life.

“Chesterton lays great stress on the youth of Dickens; it is only right that he should do this; the early life of Dickens was probably responsible for the wonderful genius of his art.”

A Strange Wind Blows Into Beacon House
The story begins with weather. A strong, bright wind sweeps across the country near London, and in its wake a tall, energetic stranger appears at Beacon House. He is Innocent Smith, and his arrival is as odd as the wind that carried him. He does not use the front door in the way a normal guest would. He seems to drop out of the air, full of delight at things that most people stopped seeing years ago.
Beacon House is a boarding house run by Mrs. Duke, and her niece Diana Duke lives there too. The guests include a gloomy young man named Michael Moon, a worried doctor named Dr. Warner, and a young woman named Rosamund Hunt, along with others such as Arthur Inglewood and a journalist, Moses Gould. Each has an opinion about how dull or dreadful the world has become. The house is comfortable, but it is not alive.
