About this book
What does it mean to be set apart—and how does Christian teaching connect that calling with the Holy Spirit?
On the Anointing explores a Christian theme through the image of oil poured or rubbed on a person to mark a calling. Drawing on the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, it considers kings, priests and prophets, and the meaning Christians find in naming Jesus the Christ: the anointed one.
The focus moves from oil and sacred roles to questions of daily life. How do Christian writers understand the Spirit’s presence? Is anointing only for leaders? Through themes of service, purpose and spiritual authority, this collection considers how believers understand their calling, whether in teaching, healing or the less visible work of quiet faithfulness.

Oil marks a person as set apart
In ancient Israel, oil was poured on a person to mark a new role. Priests were anointed for service at the sanctuary. Kings such as Saul and David were anointed by prophets. Prophets themselves could be spoken of as anointed.
The act was more than a ceremony. It showed that the person had been chosen and that the choice came from God, not from the person's own ambition. The oil was a sign, and the role it pointed to was the real matter.

What does anointing mean in the Bible?
Anointing means pouring or rubbing oil on a person or object to set it apart for God. In the Hebrew Bible it marked priests, kings and sometimes prophets. In the New Testament it also describes the gift of the Spirit.
Why is Jesus called Christ?
Christ comes from the Greek Christos, meaning anointed one, which translates the Hebrew Messiah. Christians use it to say that Jesus is the chosen king, prophet and priest, anointed with the Holy Spirit.
Who wrote On the Anointing?
The author is not known. The text belongs to Christian writing on the Holy Spirit, so it is best read for its teaching on anointing, drawn from the Bible, and not for a known author's life.
