About this book
What if ancient prophecy seems to name your enemies and explain the dangers at your door?
The Habakkuk Pesher reads the biblical Book of Habakkuk as a message for a community facing crisis. Its unnamed commentator quotes short passages, then explains what they mean for the Jewish community associated with Qumran. In this reading, prophecy speaks not only about the past, but about the writer’s own troubled time.
At the heart of the commentary stand the Teacher of Righteousness, the community’s guide, and his adversary, the Wicked Priest. A conquering people called the Kittim also enter its interpretation. Through these figures, the scroll reveals how this community understands danger, faithfulness, and what it believes are the approaching last days.

A desert cave kept the scroll safe
The shepherd boy has no idea what he has found, yet his idle throw changes the course of biblical scholarship. The Habakkuk Pesher is one of the scrolls from that first cave, which scholars call Cave 1. It is written on leather in a careful, professional Hebrew hand. It covers the first two chapters of the book of Habakkuk. The scribe quotes the prophet and then explains him, column after column.
Its condition astonishes people. The dry air of the Dead Sea region and the sealed clay jars protected the leather, so the ink is still dark and the letters can still be read. Scholars date this copy to the first century BCE. That makes it among the oldest surviving commentaries on a biblical book.

What is the Habakkuk Pesher about?
It is a Hebrew commentary on the biblical book of Habakkuk. It quotes the prophet and explains each passage as describing the Qumran community's own time, including its Teacher, its enemies and the arrival of the Kittim.
Who are the Teacher of Righteousness and the Wicked Priest?
They are titles, not names. The Teacher is the community's founding interpreter, to whom God made known the prophets' mysteries. The Wicked Priest is a corrupt ruler who persecutes him. Scholars still debate who they were.
What does the word pesher mean?
Pesher is Hebrew for interpretation. In the scrolls it names a kind of commentary that quotes a biblical line and then explains what it means for the community's own day and for the last days.
